In 1863 Henry Wickenburg discovered Gold in the Wickenburg area. One of the stories says that Henry shot a vulture perched on a quartz rock ledge and when he came closer to the dead bird he saw the rock containing the precious metal. Henry built the Vulture Mine and during the following years of its operation it processed many tons of ore. Nowadays the town of Wickenburg is a thriving community, with the beautiful mountains as background, desert scenery and great climate. Many a ranch used to be here, several are left. Wickenburg still is pretty much a horse town, with rodeos, roping practice and miles and miles of riding trails. Golf is very popular and a year round activity. And don't forget, Wickenburg is located along the Hassayampa river. Although it is dry most of the time, it provides the town with water. The Indian word Hassayampa means "river that runs underground".

Wickenburg is surrounded by several smaller communities, like Congress and Yarnell (also mining towns), Peeples Valley, Morristown and Aguila. Aguila mean Eagle in Spanish and if you look towards the south you can see the bird's head and beak silhouetted in the mountains. Aguila is known for it's agriculture and boasts it's own small plane airport (Eagles Roost) where the pilot can taxi into his own hangar and home.
